Funeral Blues

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now; put out every one,
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun,
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood;
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
시계는 죄다 멈춰라, 전화도 끊어라
개에게 뼈다귀를 주어 짖지 말게 하라
피아노는 치지 말고 북은 소리를 죽여
관을 내어 놓고 조문객들을 맞으라
비행기를 머리 위에 띄워 탄식하며
하늘에 “그가 죽었다”는 글자를 쓰게 하라
비둘기들의 흰 목에 검은 상장(喪章)을 두르고
교통순경에게 검은 면장갑을 끼게 하라
그는 나의 동, 서, 남, 북이었고
내 나날의 노동, 내 일요일의 휴식
나의 정오, 나의 자정, 나의 대화, 나의 노래였다.
나는 사랑이 영원하리라 여겼으나 틀린 생각이었다
이제 별들은 필요 없다. 다 꺼 버려라
달도 치워버리고 해도 없애 버려라
바닷물도 빼버리고 숲도 없애 버려라
이제 어느 것도 다 소용 없나니
